Extensions

The far-fetched features, switched on or off as one thing: what each bundle carries, what leaves the app when it is off, and how the defaults follow the settings depth.

Extensions are the features most people never expect a keyboard to have: a bubble level, a music recogniser, a link to the desktop, a notebook, a speed test. Each is one row here with one switch, and shows up nowhere else until it is on. The necessities are not here. Voice typing, the clipboard, snippets, translate and AI are what a keyboard is for today, and each has its own switch where it lives.

WM Keyboard  Extensions

Reach it from Home, under Features, or from the first row of WM Keyboard  Advanced. The deep link is wmkeyboard://settings/extensions, and each bundle’s own page answers to wmkeyboard://settings/extension/NAME, where the name is the one in the table below.

A bundle that is off is gone, not greyed out:

  • Its rows leave Advanced.
  • Its tools leave the Tools list and every tool picker in the app: the floating button’s, the hardware shortcuts’, the smart chips’.
  • Its tools leave the keyboard’s toolbar and toolbox, and the panels they open no longer open. The tools you had switched on stay recorded, so they come back when the bundle does.
  • Its screens and their rows leave settings search and the settings assistant.
  • A link to one of its screens, from another app, from the keyboard or from a favourite, opens this screen with the bundle’s row flashed instead of the page.
  • The background work it owns stops.

Nothing is deleted. Notes, packs, scores, pairings and keys are all still on the phone, and the settings inside the bundle keep their values.

Tap a row’s name to open the bundle’s page. It repeats the switch at the top, then lists the tools and the settings screens the bundle carries. While the bundle is off those rows are greyed out and do nothing, because the pages they would open are the ones the switch took away.

Keyboard modes already had a switch that turned the feature off. The bundle’s switch moves that one with it, in both directions, so the two never disagree.

Which bundles start on follows the answer to the setup wizard’s “What kind of keyboard do you want?”, the same answer that sets the settings depth:

  • Keep it simple starts with no extension on.
  • A good middle starts with the bundles that work the moment they are on, with no pairing, account, sensor or grant behind them: Stickers, GIFs and emoji mixes, Scanners, Handwriting, Notes, Vocabulary, Calculator and converters, Web search, Camera and gallery, Calendar and clock, Generators, Typing test, Read back, Learn from text, and Find and replace.
  • Show me everything starts with every bundle on.

A default moves no tool switch: a bundle that is on shows its tools as the starter tool set left them. An install updated from a version without this screen keeps every bundle on, whatever depth it is showing.

  • The Extensions screen and the bundles’ own pages belong to no bundle, so there is always a way back.
  • Changing the settings depth later does not change which bundles are on. The depth sets the starting point once, in the wizard.
  • A tool the bundle owns that you had turned off stays off when the bundle comes back. The bundle’s switch and the tool’s switch are two different things.
  • Backups carry the set. Restoring a backup from a phone where a bundle was off switches it off here too.
